Difference between mA & mAS in an Xray Machine?

Dear All,

A few days before one of my friend working in a private hospital wanted to purchase a Mobile X-Ray Machine. The Hospital already had two mobile 100mas xray machines but the doctor was not satisfied with its image quality and doctor advised to purchase a 300 mas machine. Here if look carefully there is not any discussion for ma but the discussion is about mas.For you to understand this discussion you must know about difference between ma and mas then you will be able to decide which machine is suitable for you with higher ma or mas?

Difference between mA and mAS is as under:

mA :stands for milliampere and is simply the current passed through the filament of an xray tube.

mAs : stands for milliampere through filament of xray tube ,multiplied by the time for which this current passes.
For example:suppose 100 ma current is passing through the filament for 3sec then we can call it 300 mas
Now the maximum mas of a machine depends upon its capability(hardware resources).

Moreover mAs: governs the amount of X-Rays reaching the film
  • mAs too low (underexposure) results in a pale film
  • mAs too high (overexposure) results in a dark film

but the higher you go for mas the higher you have to pay for it.

Please free to contact if you have any questions regarding this material.

  4. Hi ,
but how we can decide that an xray machine 100mas is 100ma machine?

  5. Hi,
As a radiographer, we not normally say mA multiply by time. In your example, “
For example:suppose 100 ma current is passing through the filament for 3sec then we can call it 300 mas.”

  7. dear i'm shallom and satisfied on your answer. but i have additional question. my question is that
how mas value affect the image quality of x ray machine
